Refrigerator Power Consumption – BEE Star Ratings (Bureau of Energy Efficiency)
We will be discussing the BEE star rating program of the refrigerator Electricity savings BEE; this is a critical topic for your UPSC examination also, just kidding. We will be discussing it in detail in this post and the content that we will be reviewing today.
BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) Star Rating: Topics Covered
- We will see the current effect of the BEE rating, which is the B star rating program.
- We will see what the current impact is
- We will discuss energy efficiency in India
- We will see what the BEE star rating program is
- We will discuss the standards and labeling program
The Government of India set up the BEE(Bureau of energy efficiency) on the 1st of March 2002, and it comes under the energy conservation Act of 2001. The mission of the BEE of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is to assist in developing plans and procedures with a push on self-regulation and business laws within the overall structure of the Energy Conservation Act of 2001.
The primary objective is to reduce the energy intensity of the Indian economy. It coordinates with designated consumers, designated agencies, and other organizations, and these are the stakeholders.
BEE collaborates or works with the consumer’s agencies and organizations, and it also recognizes and utilizes the actual resources and foundation in achieving the roles attributed to it under the energy conservation act. So remember two things it comes under the Energy Conservation Act, and the primary purpose of the primary objective is to reduce the energy intensity of the Indian economy.
Is Star Rating Criteria for Refrigerators Distinctive?
Yes, several appliances have various star rating specifications. There are different units of measures for different home appliances, which is the critical factor in deriving at BEE start rating. The BEE star rating unit of measure of the refrigerator is the anticipated yearly energy consumption in kWh. We have added a BEE rating chart for a refrigerator, which will help learn the different energy consumption by different Star ratings and the annual savings in cost and environmental damage due to such a Star efficient refrigerator.
The star ratings for a refrigerator vary with the size and load capacity; therefore, we have just provided you with a 250 L frost-free refrigerator chart. There is a specific formula for calculating and determining the BEE Star ratings. In 2020, I would recommend you go for a 5star refrigerator as they will cover the cost of your fridge in the future.
Standards and Labeling Program Standards: BEE
Labeling program is one of the major thrust areas of BEE, so this is one of the major focus areas of BEE (Bureau of energy efficiency). The scheme’s critical objective is to give purchasers a knowledgeable choice about energy-saving and thereby the cost of savings offered by relevant marketed products.
The BEE Bureau of Energy Efficiency undertakes this program or the scheme. The objective is to provide consumers with an informed choice.
What is an informed choice about energy-saving and cost-saving?
The scheme targets the display of energy performance levels on high energy and the use of equipment in appliances. It lays down minimum energy performance standards. For example, if you have purchased certainly electronic appliances like refrigerators or AC, air conditioners, etc. you will see there can be 1 star, 2-stars, 3-stars, 4-stars, or maximum up to 5-stars ratings.
These stars will give you an idea about the energy efficiency of that particular appliance and the cost-saving with the use of that appliance. The consumers are well informed about the energy efficiency of a machine. The reason behind the name Standards and Labeling Program Standard is that the BEE also provides the minimum energy performance standards.
The reason you should have the BEE knowledge is its ecology and environment-related things, and you should know how you can protect your environment. It becomes essential for you, so from that perspective, we also need to cover this topic in much detail.

Expanded Star Labeling program: Refrigerators
The BEE( Bureau of Energy Efficiency) was in the news recently as it celebrated the 19th foundation day with Bureau of Energy Efficiency and Ministry of Power. They created a stakeholder conference to form a vision towards developing an energy-efficient India. The BEE expanded the coverage of its star labeling program.
Expanded Star Labeling program means that more items or more commodities are included in its star labeling, namely energy-efficient deep freezer and light commercial air conditioners. With this inclusion, BEE will cover new 26 applications under this star labeling program, and the program will initially be launched involuntary mode from the 2nd of March 2020 to 31st of December 2021.
So presently, this will be on voluntary mode, and after that, it will be executed compulsory after examining the extent of market conversion in this singular section of appliances. The initiative is expected to save around 2.8 billion units financially by 2030, which is equivalent to greenhouse gas reduction of 2.4 million tons of carbon dioxide.
The BEE has formulated a star labeling program, and it comes under the Energy Conservation Act of 2001. During the event, a database on energy efficiency was also launched, so this database on energy efficiency is called a Huge Effective information tool. The huge attached data information tool is a database on energy efficiency is the initiative taken by BEE along with the World Resources Initiative(WRI).
It is a user-friendly platform that explains India’s energy efficiency landscape across industry appliances, building, transport, municipal and agricultural sectors. The database also shows the capacity building and new initiatives taken up by the government across the industry in the increased energy efficiency domain.
Current Status of Energy Efficiency in India: Refrigerator Electricity savings BEE
India’s energy sector is set for a transition with its new development targeted by the government. The government of India has recently taken up many projects, many schemes, and significant initiatives for the transformation of the energy sector in India. It includes 175 gigawatts of installed renewable energy capacity by 2022, and it is an ambitious target set by the government.
It has also aimed to provide a 24/7 power supply for all housing projects by 2020. Two hundred smart cities are set for the mission of promoting mobility that is electric mobility or the use of electric vehicles. The purpose also includes electrification of the railway sector, electrification of households, solarization of agricultural pump sets, promotion of clean cooking through providing LPG, and many other activities to make energy-efficient India.
According to World Energy Outlook, energy efficiency has a maximum greenhouse gas abatement potential of around fifty percent, followed by renewable biofuels, nuclear carbon capture, and storage. The International Energy Agency (IEA) publishes it.
India can avoid building 300 gigawatts of new energy production up to 2040 with the implementation of aggressive power efficiency policies. Successful implementation of power efficiency measures added to power savings of 7.14 percent of total current expenditure of the nation and radiation decrease of 108.20 to 8 million tons of carbon dioxide during 2017-18.
